Track Of The Day – Veronica Falls -” My Heart Beats”

Veronica Falls New Song "My Heart Beats"

Veronica Falls release  the first preview of brand new material since their fabulous  début album, which was in our top five albums of 2011. Yet again its a wonderful melodic slice of frenetically strummed, beautifully sung pop, with that classic retro indie vibe which has won them so many fans in the last year. We love this and them.

The band are also playing their biggest UK tour to date in March, including a headline show at the Scala. There will also be festival dates to be announced for the summer…

8 – Leaf, Liverpool
9 – Deaf Institute, Manchester
10 – Stereo, Glasgow
11 – Stereo, York
13 – Haunt, Brighton
14 – Scala, London

The Jesus And Mary Chain Return

The Jesus And Mary Chain Return For Gigs In 2012

Following last year’s  deluxe reissue package, the Jesus and Mary Chain have announced their first shows since 2008. Unfortunately for us Brits they are US only dates so far. Their mysterious and enigmatic spokesman Kevin Smythe describes it as the band “dipping their toes in the water again.” As well as William and Jim Reid the Mary Chain line-up will include ex Lush bassist Phil King and The VPME’s  chum and former member John Moore. Will Bobby Gillespie return on drums? Probably not….

We asked John how long this had been in the offing to which he replied

“It’s taken me by surprise as well VP, When Jim called on Sunday night I thought he was going to tell me someone had died. I love the way he lands things on me. ‘what are you doing come the ides of March.’ we always speak in Shakespearean. If I’d said I was going to creosote the shed he’d have changed the subject. Lucky I didn’t.

Hopefully it’ll be more than four gigs…I’m envisaging a world tour, Rock’n’Roll Phileas Foggs. I always make a point of joining The Jesus And Mary Chain every quarter of a century.”

US dates are as follows and ticket info will be announced via the bands website

03-11 Denton, TX – 35 Denton Festival
03-12 New Orleans, LA – House of Blues
03-13 Houston, TX – House of Blues
03-14-18 Austin, TX – SXSW

You can hear Jim, John alongside former bassist Douglas Hart and ex drummer Murray Dalglish chat on our special Mary Chain podcast  HERE.

Track Of The Day – Severin – “High Shot”

London noise pop electronica duo SEVERIN  release their debut EP “Everything Breaks” on Tip Top Recordings (Blue on Blue, Royal Treatment Plant) on 19th March 2012 on 12″ vinyl and download.

Their debut EP will be preceded by single “High Shot” on March 5th, which sounds like a post industrial apocalyptic version of Strawberry Switchblade.

Songs To Learn And Sing – Oh Minnows(Mary Chain cover) Kathleen Edwards and exlovers

Oh Minnows Just Like Honey- VpmeOh Minnows

Oh Minnows has done a beautiful cover of Jesus & Mary Chains ”Just Like Honey” for part of the Just Like Honey charity cover compilation. The album itself is basically twelve reimaginings by different artists of this classic track.

100 % profit from all the songs will be donated to Breast Cancer Care (http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/)

Oh Minnows plays every instrument on the track himself and recorded it in his home studio in Brookyln, New York. A great song, an ace cover and an excellent cause.

For more info and the full list of bands involved on the ”Just Like Honey” compilation please check out –

Kathleen Edwards.

We recently played Canadian songstress Kathleen Edwards wonderful song “Chameleon/ Comedian” on our latest podcast, now if you liked that, it should follow that you’ll love her
new album ‘Voyageur’ produced by Edwards and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver)

Her next single “Change The Sheets” is out on 20th February and is currently doing the biz on 6 Music.

And finally VPME favourites exlovers release a new video for their recent free download “Starlight Starlight“, which coincidently is one of  Jimmy Two Times from Goodfellas favourite ever tracks 😉

Track Of The Day – “Boundary” By Ivory Seas.

We must confess we don’t know a great deal about Ivory Seas other than what they’ve told us. In fact we don’t even know what they look like, however our interrogation which included the humane use of thumbscrews yielded the following info:  They  launched  as a unit in early January 2012 , their members are Adam Heron (vocals, guitar), Thomas Walker (vocals, guitar, keys), George Latham (drums) and Brendan O’Boyle (bass) and they performed their debut gig at the ‘Artrocker New Blood Festival’. They are  heading back into the studio in early this March to record their debut EP with producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts/Egyptian Hip Hop).

“Boundary” is a beguiling  introduction to their sound, there’s a faint touch of Brett Anderson about the vocal and a lilting melody that eddies and flows and reminds us of viewing stars as they shimmer,  reflect and fracture off a gentle mountain stream … Ahem!!!  but before we get carried away by the spirit of Paul Morley, have a listen yourself ,  it’s lovely stuff.

Track Of The Day – “Hide” By Access Royale.

Access Royale are an eclectic indie rock band hailing from Washington DC.  With influences which include Classic rock, hip hop and Radiohead the band discovered each other when the cosmos collided via Craigslist in early 2011, and pretty soon after were all hotfooting it to L.A. to film the video for their single “Hide.”

“Hide” is essentially about achieving balance between the things you have to do and things you love to do, the overriding message being- try not to let life get in the way of LIVING ! So  uplifting it might even cheer Sir Fred Goodwin up!
